To Taste the Sun

To Taste the Sun

Before it reared
Millions of seeds had dried and
Died in the earth,
Before it survived
Pushing frail cotyledons through
The veiling velvety clod.

Before it flared
Innumerable buds had been
Scorched to death,
Shrivelled they fell without protest,
Ere it blossomed.

Before she shone
Countless stars were birthed and
In the primal flames buried,
Billions had flailed and perished before
She burned with flourish!
